Brief description of the activity and the Organization?s role
This pilot project focuses on micro and small enterprises in Bali and provides export capacity building workshops and market development activities to assist rural and urban organizations develop their knowledge and understanding of international markets/buyers and their needs. BICG has been contracted by the Kuta Small Business Association to manage the program.
The program began with an introductory conference attended by the head of the Bali provincial ministry of industry and trade, the project partners, Austrian and Italian Chambers of Commerce and their representatives, as well as local media and SMEs. A total of 254 attended.
To ensure local ownership and continuation of the project capacity building began with the training of 12 local facilitators. They were trained by European experts in April, 2005. Training workshops were then provided for 36 micro-enterprises in customer relationship management, export marketing, and packaging. Currently, individual mentoring is being provided by local facilitators to help SMEs develop business plans, and to collect company information and photos.
Brief description of activity outcomes
This trade development pilot project has successfully increased the international market and export capacity of >36 rural and urban micro-enterprises, mainly from Bali but also from Java and Malang.
The development of business plans has enabled the SMEs to pro-actively look for funding either through credits or partnerships.
Currently a web portal (www.eurobali.org) is under development to profile the selected SMEs and provide access to the European market linking with European Chambers of Commerce and business institutions as well as direct buyers.
