Brief description of the activity and the Organization?s role
The mountain region of Tabanan is a traditional farming area in an effort to stop the drifting of the younger generations to the towns in their search of work, a survey showed that most of this group would prefer to stay in their home area if they could find non-farming work.
This project was therefore designed to provide sustainable livelihoods to young rural villagers while supporting and providing training in nature conservation and eco-tourism.
Norm vant Hoff of BICG was commissioned by environmental NGO GUS to design an eco-tourism site that provided bush walks, a picnic area with garden and a viewing tower so that visitors could see the panorama. The construction of the tower and eco-tourism, first aid, and basic business management training were also provided by BICG. The final stages of this program to be completed this month have been to help the young people in the project set-up their own business to manage and market this eco-tourism site. Technical assistance, business planning and management tools and monitoring, as well as project design have been delivered by BICG.
Brief description of activity outcomes
A new business, CV Buana Asri, is currently being registered, ownership vested in a group of young locals.
Six young villagers, and their families will benefit from the project directly, and it is expected to have significant flow-on to the community.
A greater emphasis has been placed on nature conservation, as locals begin to see a connection between income and preserving their environment.
